When it comes to planning your Lake Tahoe photo session, timing isn’t just a detail, it’s everything.

The time of day we shoot completely changes the mood, colors, and overall look of your photos. Harsh light can make you squint and bring out every line and shadow, while soft light smooths skin and gives everything a warm, romantic glow. In Tahoe, light has its own personality—filtered through the trees it can look soft and dreamy, but over the lake it can be blinding and harsh, making your photos look like they were taken at noon. The Sierras cast long shadows, the lake reflects color like a mirror, and the sun disappears earlier in some spots than others. All of these quirks make timing one of the most important decisions we’ll make for your session.

As a local photographer, I know how to work with Tahoe’s unique light so your photos turn out flattering, natural, and full of that signature Tahoe magic.

Here’s your cheat sheet to picking the perfect time of day for your session.

Sunrise:

The Dreamy, Crowd-Free Option

If you can handle an early wake-up call, sunrise is Tahoe at its most peaceful and magical. The light at this hour is soft and diffused—no harsh shadows, no squinting, no sweat. Skin tones look smooth and even, and the entire landscape glows in a subtle, pastel palette.

This is also the ONLY time we can shoot at Emerald Bay. Since it faces east, sunset leaves us with a shaded foreground and a blown-out sky—not exactly the romantic backdrop you’re dreaming of. But at sunrise? Emerald Bay is absolutely breathtaking, and you’ll have it all to yourself.

Why choose sunrise?

  • Zero crowds (yes, really).
  • Soft, flattering light that’s kind to all skin tones.
  • Cooler temps = no shiny foreheads or flushed cheeks.
  • A glassy, mirror-like lake.

The tradeoff?

You’ll be setting an alarm between 4:30 and 7am depending on the season. But honestly? Some of my favorite sessions ever happened in the quiet stillness of the morning. There’s something magical about being the only ones out there.

Summer session start times range from 4:30am to 7am

Winter session start times range from 6am to 8am

Morning glow:

Morning golden hour feel without the late night

Here’s the scoop: while most people think the only dreamy light happens at sunrise or sunset, a few other tucked-away spots have a magic window in the late morning. When the sun is still just below the tree line, it filters through the pines and creates that same warm, glowy effect we all love...without the 5am wake-up call or the 8:30pm start time.

This is an awesome option for families who want soft, flattering light but also need a schedule that works with naps, dinner, or earlier bedtimes. It’s not technically golden hour, but the look is similar.

That said, this trick only works in certain locations, and it’s a little more dependent on time of year and tree coverage. But if you’re flexible and love the idea of a morning session with gorgeous, soft light, this could be a perfect fit.

Now remember, this is for meadow/forest photos only. Your lake photos at this time will look like midday timing and if we choose a location near South Lake Tahoe, you will be looking directly into the sun with the lake in the background. Read: I cannot promise you non-squinty lake background portraits during this type of session. However, if we choose a north location, our lake photos will look a lot like a midday session... true blue with some side lighting!

That said, if a morning session is the only option that works for your family, don’t worry... I totally get it, and I always make the best of the conditions we have. Just want to set clear expectations so you know what kind of lighting and tones to expect.

Why choose Morning Glow?

  • Soft, flattering light that feels like golden hour.
  • Great for families with kids who can’t do sunset sessions or are fighting jet lag.
  • Works well for pine tree backdrops

The tradeoff?

  • Does not work well for lake backdrops and portraits (South)

Summer session start times range from 9am to 9:30am

Winter session start times range from 8am to 8:30am

South Lake Tahoe, Mid Morning Session

North Lake tahoe, Mid Morning Session

Midday:

Fun in the sun, playtime on the lake

Midday light in Tahoe is bright, bold, and… not exactly forgiving. With the sun high overhead, it creates strong shadows under eyes and noses, emphasizes wrinkles and texture, and makes everyone squint. (Not the best for those flattering face close-ups.)

That’s why I only recommend midday for fun, playful, candid sessions—think splashing in the lake, paddleboarding, kayaking, or just living your best sun-soaked life. This is also when Tahoe’s water is at its most vibrant. If you want those bold, turquoise “wish you were here” shots, midday delivers.

Now, I know you might be thinking — “Well, we can just shoot in the shade if it’s midday!” And yes, we absolutely can. But just keep in mind, it’s still not golden hour light. Tahoe’s pine trees are a deep green, and in that harsh midday sun, the shaded areas can cast a greenish tint that often comes through looking muddy in photos.

Why choose midday?

  • Perfect for lake activity-focused sessions.
  • Bright, bold colors (especially in the water).
  • Great for beach playtime and photos where wardrobe doesn't matter.

The tradeoff?

Not ideal for soft portraits or flattering face light. Bring your sunglasses and SPF!

Summer session start times range from 10am to 2pm

Winter session start times range from 9am to 1pm

Pre-Sunset:

The Golden Sweet Spot

Pre-sunset is a crowd favorite for a reason. The sun starts to lower, shadows soften, and golden hour begins to cast its warm, dreamy glow. This kind of light is a natural skin-smoother and super flattering for everyone!

This session time is especially great if you want beautiful evergreen trees in your photos. As the sun filters through the branches, it creates dreamy beams of light and dappled shadows that feel straight out of a fairy tale. Forested and meadow-ey areas really shine during this time—it’s warm, romantic, and looks like a scene from a storybook.

But let’s talk about the lake. At pre-sunset, the sun is still too high in the sky, and the lake reflects the light harshly. Instead of that calm, even glow you see at and after sunset, the lake surface will appear bright and blown out. This is definitely less ideal if you are wanting the lake to be your main focus.

Most of our pre-sunset session will focus on meadow and forest backdrops, with a few lake photos at the end allowing the sun to drop as low as possible during our time together!

If you’re dreaming of wide shots where the lake is the star of the show, I’d recommend holding off until the sun goes down further by choosing the sunset time frame.

Why choose pre-sunset?

  • Earlier golden light (great for families with kids).
  • Perfect for forested areas with tall pines and glowing sunbeams.
  • Flattering tones for skin and hair.

Summer session start times range from 5pm to 6:30pm

Winter session start times range from 2:30pm to 3:30pm

Sunset:

The Postcard Moment

If you’re envisioning those iconic Lake Tahoe photos — the rich colors, calm water, and glowing skies — sunset is your time. As the sun dips, the light evens out across the lake, removing harsh contrasts and giving us perfect conditions for portraits and wide scenic shots. Faces are beautifully illuminated, the colors become richer, and the sky starts its dramatic golden-to-pastel transition.

Right after sunset is actually the best time for those wide lake shots, where both you and the water are evenly lit — no harsh shadows, no glare. It’s when we can shoot just about anywhere with gorgeous, balanced light and tons of flexibility with backgrounds.

Alpenglow is the soft, pinkish light that appears on the mountains and sometimes in the sky just after the sun has set or just before it rises — when the sun is below the horizon, but still illuminating the atmosphere.

In Lake Tahoe, it often shows up as a beautiful wash of pinks, purples, and oranges reflecting off the water and mountains. It’s not direct sunlight — it’s more like nature’s encore: no harsh shadows, just a dreamy, glowy, ethereal light that feels almost surreal.

Why choose pre-sunset?

  • Ideal for lake-centric photos.
  • Even, flattering light on faces and water.
  • Gorgeous golden hour + pastel skies.
  • Post-sunset alpenglow for a perfect finish.

Summer session start times range from 7pm to 8:30pm

Winter session start times range from 3:30pm to 5:00pm

So...which time of day is right for you?

Each time of day has its own personality:

🌅 Sunrise for peaceful, crowd-free beauty and soft pastels.

🌤 Morning Glow for jet lagged kids and Tahoe blue.

🌞 Midday for playful, water-loving energy and bright colors.

✨ Pre-sunset for golden glow in the trees and early evening flexibility.

🌙 Sunset for iconic lake photos and alpenglow magic.

Your choice comes down to your lifestyle, your location, and the vibe you’re after. I’ll help you figure out the best option so you get photos that feel true to you.

As for me? My photographer heart loves sunrise. It’s quiet, calm, and ridiculously beautiful. But I get it—sleep is precious. (And caffeine isn’t magic for everyone.) So let’s find a time that works for you.

A little Note

Because Tahoe Does what she wants...

The photos you see on this post (or anywhere on my website or Instagram) are meant to give you a feel for what’s possible—but no two sessions are ever exactly the same. Why? Because everything affects how your photos will look: your outfits, the wind, the sun, the clarity of the lake, the time of year, the time of day, and even the lake’s mood. (Yes, she has an attitude. Sometimes glassy and calm, sometimes showing off with waves or deep blues.)

That’s part of the magic of shooting in Lake Tahoe—it’s always beautiful, but never the same kind of beautiful twice.

So, in conclusion...

Your photo session isn’t just about showing up and hoping for the best—it’s about creating an experience that feels easy, fun, and totally you. My number one priority is making sure you feel comfortable, taken care of, and maybe even a little excited to chase light around Tahoe with me.

Choosing the right time of day is a big part of that. It’s not just about flattering light, it’s about setting us all up for success. The right timing means locations that look their best, a vibe that matches your energy, and photos that feel as effortless as they look.

So whether you’re an early bird ready for sunrise magic, a sunset dreamer chasing that alpenglow, or just want to splash around in the lake at midday—I’ll help you plan a session that’s as unforgettable as the photos we’ll create together.
